Your garden provides a haven away from the hustle and bustle of working life, so it is important to have an easy-to-follow maintenance programme to ensure it is looking lush and green.

Mowing Lawns in Spring

Regular mowing is one of the most effective ways to support your grass care routine in early spring. Our local lawn care experts recommend keeping mower blades sharp and initially mowing to a height of 2-2.5 inches, which can then be reduced to 1-1.5 inches when good growing conditions begin. Do not mow your lawn below a height of 1 inch, as this can scalp your lawn and weaken it, leaving it vulnerable to competition from weeds.

Spring lawn mowing tips:

  • Start mowing when grass begins to grow—typically when soil reaches around 8 to 10°C
  • Set your mower to 2–2.5 inches for early spring cuts
  • Lower gradually to 1–1.5 inches once growing conditions improve
  • Never cut below 1 inch—scalping weakens your lawn and invites weeds
  • Always use sharp blades for a clean, healthy cut

Treating Lawn Weeds In Spring

As temperatures start to increase with spring, you will begin to notice invasive weeds creeping into your lawn. Weeds can outcompete and smother your grass so it is important to control these unsightly plants. Weeds are a common problem tackled in our affordable lawn treatment packages, part of our seasonal lawn care plans. Our Selective Weed Killer, which is a part of both our Early Season Treatment and Mid-Season Treatment, will help you control and reduce weed growth in your lawn.

Spring lawn weed control tips:

  • Apply weed control when weeds are actively growing
  • Avoid mowing 3 days before and after application for best results
  • Spot treat persistent weeds like clover, buttercup, dandelions and others with an effective selective weed killer (one that does not kill grass)
  • Alternatively, you can pull isolated weeds by hand with the roots to prevent regrowth

Fertilising your Lawn

Fertilisation during spring is essential for strengthening your lawn and boosting growth. Fertiliser helps to provide your lawn with the essential nutrients it needs to ensure a healthy lawn. Our Season Starter Treatment, Early Season Treatment and Mid-Season lawn care treatments all contain a fertiliser application that will give your lawn a much-needed boost.

Spring Lawn Fertilising tips

  • Use a balanced fertiliser with the right amounts of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium
  • If you are using a combination feed, weed and moss granule you should apply on mild, damp days, whilst avoiding heavy rainfall. NOTE: It is essential that this type of combination granule is watered in to avoid scorch. Remember to follow all the label instructions for use.

Aerating your Lawn

The spring period is also a great opportunity to have your lawn aerated. Aeration helps to decompact your lawn by punching holes in the lawn that allow moisture and nutrients access to the root zone of the grass plant. Your lawn may become compacted over the winter, so aeration is a vital way of alleviating this.

Spring lawn aeration tips:

  • Aeration can be carried out at any time of year, providing the aerator tines can penetrate the soil and the soil is not waterlogged
  • The simplest method of DIY aeration is to use a garden fork at a depth of 2 to 3 inches and evenly spaced across the lawn. This is best carried out in the Spring and Autumn when the soil is moist.
  • Use a hollow-tine aerator if you are replacing the removed cores with a top dressing mix
  • Focus on areas prone to waterlogging or thinning

Scarifying your Lawn

Scarification is the process of removing thatch (dead organic matter) and moss from your lawn. This is done using a scarifier, which has vertical blades that help to remove the moss and thatch from the lawn. Spring is a great time to scarify a lawn as it will help moisture, air and nutrients to reach the rootzone of the grass for the growing season. TopGrass provides many different levels of scarification tailored to your lawn's needs. You can click here to find out more about our scarification packages.

Scarifying your lawn in spring – key tips:

  • Spring is perfect for light to moderate scarification
  • Reseed sparse areas after scarifying to speed up recovery
  • Avoid if dry weather is forecast—grass needs moisture to bounce back. Alternatively, you can water after scarification to help the lawn recover.

Seeding Patches in the Lawn

Spring may reveal that some bare patches have appeared in your lawn following the cold winter months. Spring is a good time to seed these areas, as conditions are more appropriate for germination. We would recommend that once you have spread grass seed on bare areas, to then rake the seed in so that it is covered by the soil. Watering the seeded areas is important to encourage germination. If your lawn requires more serious levels of seeding then you can click here to learn about our Total Reseed Renovation service.

Spring Lawn seeding tips:

  • Choose a quality UK grass seed blend suitable for your soil and light conditions
  • Rake out dead grass and loosen the surface before seeding
  • Gently rake in the seed for good soil contact
  • Keep newly seeded areas moist for 2–3 weeks
  • For larger patches of reseeding wait until new grass reaches 3 inches before mowing
